China Stocks Rally to Highest Level Since 2015

Chinese equities extended their rally on Wednesday (Aug 20, 2025), with the CSI300 rising 1.1% and the Shanghai Composite climbing 1% to 3,766 — its highest level since August 2015. The Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong added 0.2%. The surge was fueled by strong fund inflows, easing trade tensions, and Beijing’s efforts to curb excessive competition in key industries. Since July, more than 200 new mutual funds have launched, with 70% targeting equities and collectively raising 67.7 billion yuan, further boosting market momentum. Policy support also played a role, as China’s Ministry of Industry urged solar companies to tighten regulations and reduce price wars and overcapacity. Despite weak macroeconomic data and limited policy easing, UBS analysts believe the A-share rally could continue, citing strong retail investor participation while recommending defensive picks such as major banks and telecoms. Onshore turnover topped 2.5 trillion yuan for a third straight day. Tech stocks were steady despite a weaker Nasdaq, while pharma shares slipped nearly 1%. In contrast, Pop Mart jumped 12.5% to a record high after posting a nearly 400% profit surge.

Gold Slips to Three-Week Low Ahead of Jackson Hole

Gold prices fell to their lowest level in nearly three weeks on Wednesday (Aug 20, 2025), pressured by a stronger U.S. dollar and improved risk sentiment. Spot gold dipped 0.1% to $3,313.51 an ounce, while U.S. gold futures for December delivery slipped to $3,355.50. Analysts said the dollar’s strength, which makes gold more expensive for non-U.S. buyers, along with easing geopolitical concerns, weighed on bullion. Investors are now focused on Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s upcoming speech at the Jackson Hole symposium for clues on monetary policy direction. Markets are also awaiting the release of the Fed’s July meeting minutes, expected to provide further insights into policymakers’ stance. Futures pricing suggests two rate cuts of 25 basis points each this year, with the first anticipated in September—a scenario typically supportive for gold. However, for now, the metal remains under pressure as traders favor the dollar. Meanwhile, geopolitics remain in play: U.S. President Donald Trump ruled out ground troops in Ukraine but hinted at possible air support, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy welcomed progress toward a trilateral meeting with Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Oil Prices Rebound on U.S. Inventory Draw and Geopolitical Tensions

Oil prices rose about 2% on Wednesday (Aug 20, 2025) after U.S. crude inventories fell sharply by 6 million barrels, far exceeding analysts’ expectations of a 1.8 million-barrel draw. Brent futures gained 1.6% to $66.84 per barrel, while WTI rose 1.4% to $63.21. Analysts described the report as “bullish,” citing stronger refinery demand and higher exports. The rebound came a day after prices slid over 1% on hopes of progress in Russia-Ukraine peace talks, which continue to drive daily volatility in the energy market. Despite negotiations, geopolitical risks remain elevated. U.S. President Donald Trump ruled out deploying ground troops in Ukraine but signaled possible air support, while warning India with new tariffs for continuing to buy discounted Russian oil. Russia, the world’s second-largest crude producer, said resolving Ukraine’s security issues without Moscow is “futile,” while affirming its commitment to supply oil to India and seeking trilateral talks with Beijing and New Delhi. With Russian forces advancing in eastern Ukraine and sanctions still in place, analysts caution that hopes for a quick resolution appear increasingly unlikely.
