US–Iran Diplomacy Stalls, Middle East Tensions Escalate
Hopes for a diplomatic breakthrough in the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran continued to fade on Sunday (April 26, 2026), as efforts to revive negotiations reached a stalemate. Both Tehran and Washington have shown no signs of softening their positions. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi returned to the Middle East after attending mediation talks in Pakistan over the weekend. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump canceled plans for his envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, to visit Islamabad. Although a ceasefire has halted full-scale fighting that began with a U.S.-Israel strike on Iran on February 28, no agreement has yet been reached on terms to end the war. The conflict has killed thousands, driven up oil prices, fueled inflation, and worsened the outlook for global economic growth.

U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were urgently evacuated from the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner on Saturday night (April 25, 2026) after an armed man attempted to breach security. According to authorities, the suspect was carrying a rifle and fired shots toward an agent of the United States Secret Service. The agent was struck, but the impact hit a protected area covered by security gear, resulting in no injuries. All federal officials, including President Trump, were reported safe. About an hour after the evacuation, Trump stated on social media that the shooter had been apprehended. “Truly an incredible night in Washington, D.C. The Secret Service and law enforcement did a very good job,” he wrote, adding that all senior officials, including the Vice President and cabinet members, were in good condition.
