SpaceX IPO Sets New Record, Boosting Confidence in US Equity Markets

SpaceX’s initial public offering (IPO) on Nasdaq was executed smoothly, providing a major boost to investor sentiment and the broader US capital markets. The successful debut is being viewed as a new benchmark for exchanges and trading firms preparing for other highly anticipated listings, including potential IPOs from OpenAI and Anthropic later this year. Held on June 12, SpaceX’s IPO became the largest public offering in US history, nearly tripling the size of the previous record holder. Given the unprecedented scale of the transaction, some market participants had feared a repeat of Facebook’s troubled 2012 IPO, which was plagued by technical issues. However, trading systems across underwriters, exchanges, market makers, clearinghouses, and other market infrastructure providers processed millions of investor orders without significant disruptions. According to Stack Capital Group CEO Jeff Parks, many had initially worried that SpaceX could face challenges similar to those experienced during Facebook’s market debut more than a decade ago.

Swiss Voters Weigh Population Cap in High-Stakes Referendum

Swiss voters headed to the polls on June 14 to decide whether to support a proposal to limit the country’s population growth, in a referendum drawing comparisons to the UK’s Brexit vote due to its potential economic and political implications. The outcome could have significant consequences for Switzerland’s economy and its relationship with the European Union. Driven by concerns over immigration, housing shortages, and increasing pressure on public services, the right-wing Swiss People’s Party (SVP) has proposed a constitutional amendment requiring the country’s population to remain below 10 million by 2050. Official projections suggest Switzerland could reach that threshold in the early 2040s, making the referendum a pivotal vote on the nation’s long-term demographic and immigration policies.

UK Leads First Direct Operation Against Russia’s Shadow Oil Fleet

The UK government has carried out its first military-led operation aimed at disrupting Russia’s oil revenues, which are believed to help finance the ongoing war in Ukraine. On June 14, British forces intercepted the sanctioned oil tanker Smyrtos, a Cameroon-flagged vessel suspected of being part of Russia’s so-called shadow fleet. Royal Marine Commandos, supported by officers from the National Crime Agency (NCA), boarded the tanker during an early-morning operation. The mission involved extensive military support, including Chinook helicopters, additional aircraft, a Royal Navy frigate, and a minehunter vessel. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the operation as a significant step in weakening Russia’s ability to fund its military campaign in Ukraine, emphasizing that those assisting President Vladimir Putin’s war effort would not be allowed to evade accountability.
