Keir Starmer Announces Resignation, Paving Way for UK’s Seventh Prime Minister in a Decade

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his intention to step down, with a successor expected to be selected before Parliament reconvenes in September. The decision sets the stage for the United Kingdom to appoint its seventh prime minister in the past decade, highlighting the continued political volatility that has characterized the post-Brexit era. The announcement comes less than two years after Starmer secured a landslide election victory that was widely seen as an opportunity to restore stability to British politics. However, Starmer acknowledged that support for his leadership within the party had weakened. Speaking about his decision, he said the key question facing the party was whether he remained the right person to lead it into the next general election, adding that he had listened to the response from Labour lawmakers and accepted their verdict with humility.

Oil Tanker Traffic Through Hormuz Picks Up as Crude Prices Retreat

Oil tanker activity in the Strait of Hormuz showed signs of recovery on Monday after slowing the previous day amid concerns over potential disruptions to shipping routes in the region. Vessel-tracking data indicated that two crude oil tankers carrying nearly 2 million barrels of oil successfully transited the strait, while two additional supertankers entered the Gulf through the same route. One of the vessels was reportedly bound for Iraq’s Basra port, according to Kpler data. Despite the improvement, tanker traffic remains well below the pre-conflict average of around 125 vessels per day before tensions involving Iran escalated on February 28. Meanwhile, global oil prices declined as fears of a major supply disruption eased. Brent crude fell by US$1.46, or 1.8%, to US$79.11 per barrel, while WTI crude traded at US$76.84 per barrel. Earlier in the session, Brent had surged to as high as US$82.30 per barrel amid concerns that Iran could move to close the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump Warns of Further Action if Iran Fails to Honor U.S. Agreement

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Washington is prepared to take additional measures if Iran fails to comply with its commitments under the recent agreement between the two countries. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Trump said he would “do what I have to do” if Iran does not uphold the deal or behaves in a manner that violates its terms. The remarks follow the signing of a temporary agreement last week between Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. The accord was reached more than three months after a series of military exchanges involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. The conflict began with U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran, which were followed by retaliatory attacks from Tehran against Israel and Gulf states hosting American military bases. Trump’s latest comments underscore Washington’s intention to closely monitor Iran’s compliance with the agreement and respond if necessary.
