China’s June Exports Beat Forecasts as AI Chip Demand and Front-Loaded U.S. Shipments Surge

China’s exports grew faster than expected in June 2026, supported by strong global demand for semiconductors and a surge in shipments to the United States ahead of potential new tariffs. The robust trade performance helped offset broader concerns over the Iran conflict and weakening global demand, indicating that Chinese manufacturers have continued to sustain overseas sales despite slowing growth in major economies and persistent uncertainty surrounding U.S.-China trade relations. According to Reuters, China’s exports rose 27% year-on-year in U.S. dollar terms in June, marking the strongest performance in four months and exceeding both April’s 19.4% increase and economists’ forecast of 18.2%. Imports also climbed 36%, accelerating from 27.4% in the previous month and recording their fastest growth in five years, well above market expectations of 24%. Strong demand for AI-related technology products, front-loaded exports to the United States, and aggressive pricing by Chinese exporters were cited as key factors supporting the stronger-than-expected trade figures.

South Korea’s KOSPI Falls to 11-Week Low as SK Hynix Sell-Off Deepens

South Korea’s stock market extended its sharp decline on Tuesday, with the benchmark KOSPI index falling more than 5% to its lowest level in 11 weeks as investors continued to sell SK Hynix shares amid renewed tensions between the United States and Iran. The deteriorating geopolitical outlook in the Gulf prompted investors to lock in profits following the AI memory chipmaker’s strong Nasdaq debut last week. The KOSPI dropped 5.3% to 6,448.86, its lowest level since April 24, leaving the index roughly 28% below its record closing high reached on June 22. SK Hynix shares fell as much as 8.5%, touching their lowest level since May 20, after the company's U.S.-listed stock declined 9.3% overnight. The retreat followed a more than 12% surge during SK Hynix’s Nasdaq debut on July 10, highlighting a sharp reversal as investors reassessed valuations against the backdrop of rising geopolitical uncertainty.

U.S. Inflation Expected to Ease in June, but Fed Rate Hike Risks Remain

U.S. consumer inflation is expected to moderate in June 2026, although economists believe the slowdown will not be sufficient to ease the cost-of-living burden or eliminate the possibility of another interest rate increase by the Federal Reserve later this year. A Reuters survey forecasts that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 3.8% year-on-year in June, down from 4.2% in May, while monthly CPI is projected to decline 0.1%, marking the first monthly decrease since May 2020. The expected moderation is largely attributed to lower gasoline prices after they had previously surged to multi-year highs. However, analysts caution that the relief may prove temporary as renewed tensions between the United States and Iran threaten to push energy prices higher again. Last week, the collapse of the ceasefire following attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz triggered fresh military action, while President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. would reinstate a blockade on Iranian shipping through the strategic waterway. According to AAA, the national average gasoline price rose to US$3.87 per gallon on Monday from US$3.80 a week earlier. Boston College economics professor Brian Bethune said that although inflationary pressure on consumers has eased somewhat, households continue to face elevated living costs.
