Barclays Projects Two Additional Fed Rate Hikes Following Warsh's Hawkish Remarks
Barclays now forecasts that the Federal Reserve will raise its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points in both September and December 2026. This revised outlook comes after recent commentary from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh signaled a notably more hawkish stance on monetary policy. Barclays had previously anticipated that the central bank would hold rates steady for the remainder of the year, but reversed its projection following Warsh's clear indication of potential rate hikes during his speech at the Jackson Hole economic symposium on Friday. At the forum, Warsh explicitly stated that policymakers would "have work to do" if they are not fully convinced that inflation is steadily returning to the Fed's 2% target, marking his most direct signal yet that further tightening may be necessary. Warsh stressed that current inflation levels in the United States remain excessively high, while broader financial conditions are not yet sufficiently restrictive and the labor market continues to demonstrate full-employment resilience.
US and Iran Exchange Strikes in First Major Clashes in a Month
The United States and Iran have engaged in direct military exchanges for the first time in roughly a month, following a preemptive American strike against Iranian rocket platforms and subsequent retaliatory missile fire from Tehran. According to Bloomberg, U.S. Central Command spokesperson Captain Tim Hawkins stated that U.S. forces intervened after detecting Iranian preparations to deploy sea-mine-carrying rockets into the Strait of Hormuz. Hawkins emphasized that American military assets remain on high alert in the region to safeguard the unrestricted flow of international maritime commerce through the vital waterway. In response to the U.S. air assault, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) retaliated on Monday morning by launching a barrage of missiles and drones aimed at a U.S. air base situated in Jordan, according to state news agency IRNA. However, Jordan’s armed forces quickly intervened, announcing via social media that air defense systems successfully intercepted and destroyed eight incoming missiles as they crossed into sovereign airspace, completely neutralizing the threat before any damage could occur on the ground.
US Treasury Chief Urges G20 Nations to Re-evaluate China Trade Ties
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has called on G20 member nations to reassess their trade relationships with China in an effort to correct widening global trade imbalances. Speaking ahead of an upcoming meeting of G20 finance ministers and central bank governors, Bessent stressed that international partners must collectively pressure Beijing to shift away from its heavy reliance on exports and instead focus on stimulating domestic consumer spending. He warned that the current surge in Chinese exports is fundamentally unsustainable, pointing out that a weakened domestic economy is driving Beijing to rely excessively on foreign trade for growth. Underlining the severity of the issue, Bessent argued that the global economy cannot withstand China maintaining a massive $1.2 trillion trade surplus. He characterized China's strategy as an attempt to export its way out of internal economic sluggishness, asserting that the nation must urgently rebalance its own economy rather than offloading surplus capacity onto the world. As a result, the Treasury Secretary emphasized that nations across the globe need to review and recalibrate their established trading terms with Beijing to protect global economic stability.
