China Auto Exports Surge to Record Levels as Domestic Slump Enters 11th Month
Chinese passenger vehicle exports sustained robust momentum in August 2026 as automakers, led by BYD, shipped record vehicle volumes overseas, standing in stark contrast to an increasingly sluggish home market where domestic sales contracted for an 11th consecutive month. According to data released on Tuesday, September 8, by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), passenger vehicle exports surged 77.5% year-on-year to 894,000 units—a mild moderation from the 88.2% growth recorded in July. Conversely, domestic market conditions deteriorated further. Domestic retail sales fell 23.7% year-on-year to 1.55 million vehicles, accelerating from a 21.1% contraction in July. Even the new-energy vehicle (NEV) segment—encompassing battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, which represented 64.7% of all domestic deliveries—faced mounting headwinds at home, dropping 10.1% year-on-year compared to a 3.9% decline in July. By contrast, NEV foreign shipments continued to outpace broader trade, accelerating to a 154.7% export growth rate in August from 147.8% in July as Chinese manufacturers increasingly lean on international markets to absorb domestic overcapacity.
Goldman Sachs Upgrades Crude Oil Price Forecasts on Prolonged Middle East Shipping Disruptions
Goldman Sachs has raised its price forecasts for Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude benchmarks by $5 per barrel for both December 2026 and throughout 2027. The upward revision reflects growing expectations that maritime transit and shipping disruptions across the Middle East will extend well into next year, driven by the renewed escalation of military hostilities between the United States and Iran. Under the revised outlook, the investment bank now projects Brent crude to reach $85 per barrel and WTI to settle at $80 per barrel by December 2026, signaling that structural geopolitical risk premiums are likely to remain embedded in global energy markets for the foreseeable future.
Russia and North Korea Open First Road Bridge Across Tumen River, Solidifying Strategic Ties
Russia and North Korea officially inaugurated their first vehicular border bridge spanning the Tumen River on Monday, September 7, 2026, marking a tangible milestone in the deepening strategic, economic, and military alliance between Moscow and Pyongyang. The two-lane, one-kilometer-long bridge was formally opened in a synchronized ceremony as commercial freight trucks adorned with both nations' flags crossed the span, while Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and North Korean Premier Pak Thae Song addressed officials and construction teams via video link. The project, which had been under discussion for years, broke ground in April 2025 following a bilateral agreement finalized during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s summit in North Korea in 2024. While the two neighboring states have long shared direct rail and aviation links, the completion of this cross-border highway infrastructure establishes their first dedicated overland road corridor, significantly streamlining bilateral freight transit and logistical integration.
