IMF Projects Middle East, North Africa and Pakistan Economies to Contract 1.3% in 2026 Amid Iran War
The war led by the United States and Israel against Iran is expected to weigh on the economies of the Middle East, North Africa, and Pakistan throughout 2026. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) projects that the region’s economy will contract 1.3% this year before rebounding with 6.6% growth in 2027. In its regional economic outlook released in Dubai on Thursday (October 22, 2026), the fund warned that further disruptions to energy production and trade routes could worsen the region’s prospects. The IMF said the war’s impact has hit a wide range of sectors, from energy production, shipping, and tourism to trade and business confidence. Even though a recovery is expected in 2027, economic activity in these countries will generally remain below pre-war projections.
North Korea Threatens to Switch On Anti-South Loudspeakers Along Border, Raising Tensions on the Peninsula
North Korea plans to put anti-South Korea propaganda loudspeakers on standby along the border between the two countries in the coming days. The threat, issued by Kim Yo Jong, the younger sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, could heighten tensions on the Korean Peninsula. In a statement on Thursday (October 22), Kim also said North Korea has readied several new, unspecified retaliatory measures, and she warned that Seoul will face a very bad situation if it keeps doing what Pyongyang regards as interference in North Korea’s internal affairs. A day earlier, Kim said the anti-South loudspeakers would be activated along the border before the end of October, following her visit to several defense sites with senior military officials. She also claimed that North Korean tactical units have taken up new positions, and accused South Korean forces of broadcasting warnings and firing warning shots at several points near the border. South Korea’s military said the shots were a legitimate, defensive measure.
Putin Agrees to Resume US-Mediated Peace Talks With Ukraine, With Abu Dhabi Eyed as Venue
Efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war have regained momentum after Russian President Vladimir Putin approved a plan to resume peace negotiations mediated by the United States. The trilateral talks could begin in November 2026, with Abu Dhabi under consideration as the venue. The Kremlin announced the agreement on Wednesday (October 21, 2026), after Putin met US envoy Steve Witkoff in St. Petersburg, Russia. The meeting is part of Washington’s latest push to stop the bloodiest conflict in Europe since World War II. Citing Reuters, the meeting, held in an imperial palace, was the ninth face-to-face encounter between Witkoff and Putin. As an initial goodwill gesture, Russia released Stephen Hubbard, a retired American schoolteacher who had been detained in Russia. The release came after US President Donald Trump asked Putin to free him.
