The International Energy Agency (IEA) has forecast that global oil demand will reach its peak in 2029 and begin to decline in the following year. This differs from the outlook of the oil producer group OPEC, which anticipates that demand will continue to grow beyond 2029 due to the slow adoption of environmentally friendly fuels. The IEA's annual report estimates that oil demand will reach 105.6 million barrels per day in 2029, before slightly decreasing in 2030. This is driven by the increased use of electric cars, efficiency gains, and power plants shifting away from oil. The IEA also anticipates that supply capacity will reach nearly 114 million barrels per day by 2030, creating a surplus of 8 million barrels per day above projected demand. It is anticipated that non-OPEC+ producers, with the United States in particular, will account for three-quarters of this capacity increase. The report recommends that oil companies develop strategies and business plans for the next decade to adapt to the emerging supply surplus.
