Asian Markets Surge on Easing US-Iran Tensions and Stable Oil

The majority of Asian stock markets and currencies rallied on Wednesday, fueled by a renewed investor appetite for riskier assets amid hopes of de-escalating tensions between the United States and Iran. According to Reuters, the MSCI Emerging Markets Asia index climbed approximately 3%, reaching a two-week high, while an index of Asian emerging market currencies gained 0.4% to hit an all-time record. This positive sentiment was further bolstered by the stabilization of crude oil prices, which had declined for two consecutive days. Market optimism was largely driven by the prospect of a ceasefire in the Middle East and progress in discussions to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping lane for global oil trade. "Overall, the market is trying to look through to the end of the conflict rather than just focusing on potential flare-ups, and that is probably the right approach," said Michael Wan, senior currency analyst at MUFG. Wan also noted that oil prices have remained relatively contained despite supply disruptions, partly due to a larger-than-expected drop in Chinese oil imports, which has helped keep the market balanced.

Eurozone Business Activity Rebounds to Eight-Month High Despite Geopolitical Risks

Eurozone business activity experienced a solid recovery in July 2026, driven by a robust services sector and improving manufacturing output. This combined growth propelled the region's economy to its most significant expansion in eight months, although uncertainties surrounding the ongoing Middle East conflict continue to cast a shadow over future prospects. According to S&P Global's survey, the Eurozone Composite PMI climbed to 52.0 in July, up from the stagnation mark of 50.0 in June. This figure slightly surpassed the initial estimate of 51.9, marking the first time the index has comfortably sat in the expansion territory—indicated by a reading above 50—since March. Chris Williamson, Chief Business Economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, told Reuters that these survey results highlight the Eurozone's economic resilience in the face of geopolitical instability. Nevertheless, shifting global dynamics, particularly the Middle East tensions, continue to weigh on business sentiment. Demand dynamics also showed positive momentum, with new orders growing at their sharpest rate since last November due to revived services demand and better manufacturing orders. Additionally, while overall export demand remained sluggish, the pace of its contraction has slowed to its lowest point in over a year.

Houthis Claim Missile Strike on Saudi Oil Tanker in Red Sea

According to a Reuters report, the Iran-backed Houthi group claimed responsibility for a missile attack on a Saudi Arabian oil tanker off the coast of the Red Sea port city of Yanbu on Wednesday. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree confirmed the group's involvement, though he refrained from providing specific details regarding the exact timing of the strike. Currently, there has been no independent verification of these claims or any confirmed information regarding potential damage to the vessel. This latest incident underscores the escalating security threats in the Red Sea region, which serves as one of the world's most critical maritime corridors for energy distribution. Any ongoing disruptions to oil shipments in these strategic waters threaten to undermine the stability of global energy supplies and are likely to further heighten market anxieties over rising geopolitical risks.
