As part of this diplomatic offensive, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi reportedly engaged in talks with the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Qatar, alongside the Chief of the Pakistan Army. A senior regional diplomat noted that Araqchi strongly urged these U.S. allies in the Gulf to leverage their influence over President Trump to avert any new military offensives against Tehran.
Strategic Gulf Shipping Traffic Plummets Amid Middle East Tensions
Maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, two of the most strategic shipping lanes in the Gulf region, experienced a drastic decline on Wednesday amid escalating security tensions in the Middle East. According to data from the shipping tracking firm Kpler, a mere two vessels traversed the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, marking a sharp drop from the eight ships recorded just the previous day. This heavily restricted traffic consisted solely of a Panama-flagged coal carrier entering the strait and a Marshall Islands-flagged commodities vessel departing the route. Prior to the outbreak of the war involving the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28, the Strait of Hormuz typically accommodated a bustling daily flow of approximately 130 to 140 ships.
